The former Germany international irked Gunners supporters two years ago when he, with just six months remaining on his current deal, signed a lucrative new contract worth a reported £350,000-a-week.
Since then, it is fair to say Arsenal are yet to see a return on their investment as Ozil flirted with moves to Turkey during Unai Emery’s tenure and has also flattered to deceive under new boss Arteta.
But it transpires the club passed on the chance to get their top earner off the books on Friday night.
A report from the Mirror claims a team in Qatar made a bid for Ozil before the transfer window slammed shut, with the club and their manager more than eager to listen.
However, despite Arteta getting ready to sign off on the deal, the timing of the move meant Arsenal would not have been able to sign a replacement for their no.10 before the deadline.
